12 Essay Writing Tips for UK University Students (That Actually Raise Your Grade)

Practical, evidence-based essay writing tips for UK university students — from thesis statements and structure to editing, referencing and exam timing.

Most essay-writing advice you read online is generic. This guide is aimed specifically at UK undergraduates and Master’s students writing for marking schemes that reward critical analysis, structure and evidence. Here are 12 tips that move grades from a 2:2 into 2:1 and 1st territory.

1. Read the question four times

Before you write anything, read the essay title four times:

  1. Once for general meaning.
  2. Once circling the topic words (the “what”).
  3. Once underlining the directive words (the “how”: discuss, evaluate, compare, analyse, assess).
  4. Once to check constraints (word count, case studies specified, mandatory theories).

More essays lose marks from misreading the question than from bad writing.

2. Write your thesis statement first

Your thesis is the one-sentence answer to the essay question. Write it before you plan. It will change as you research — that is fine. Having a working thesis stops your essay becoming a tour of loosely related facts.

A strong thesis is:

  • Specific (not “X has many effects”)
  • Arguable (not “X happened”)
  • Directional (tells the reader how the essay will develop)

“This essay argues that digital-twin technology will transform UK construction productivity only where procurement contracts are re-engineered to reward data sharing.”

3. Build a reverse outline from the thesis

Every paragraph should answer one question that contributes to proving the thesis. Write the questions first, then fill them in:

  • Why does productivity in UK construction matter?
  • What is digital-twin technology?
  • What does the evidence say about productivity gains?
  • Why are current contracts a barrier?
  • What should change?

That is your structure. Now write.

4. Use the PEEL or PEASY paragraph model

Every paragraph:

  • Point (a claim that moves your argument forward)
  • Evidence (a reference or data point)
  • Explain (why the evidence supports the point)
  • Link (back to the thesis / forward to the next paragraph)

PEASY adds Acknowledge (a counter-argument) and Synthesise. Markers love acknowledged counter-arguments.

5. Cite primary sources where possible

Citing Harvard Business Review articles and textbooks is fine for context, but your strongest marks come from primary research: journal articles, ONS data, government white papers, legal cases. Replace one secondary source with a primary one in every paragraph.

6. Avoid “essay filler” phrases

Delete:

  • “It has been said that…” — by whom? Cite them.
  • “In today’s fast-paced world…” — say nothing, costs words.
  • “In my opinion…” — your opinion is the whole essay. Say it directly.
  • “Very unique / very perfect” — redundancies.

If a sentence survives the deletion test, it is doing work.

7. Critical analysis, not description

UK marking criteria at 2:1 and above reward critical analysis. That means you:

  • Compare multiple sources,
  • Evaluate methodology and bias,
  • Synthesise conflicting evidence,
  • Take a position based on the evidence.

A description-only essay rarely goes above 58%. Move every paragraph one level up the critical-thinking ladder.

8. Signpost constantly

Markers skim first, read deep second. Signposts make your argument visible:

  • “Having established that X, this essay now turns to…”
  • “This contradicts Patel’s (2020) findings, suggesting…”
  • “Three implications follow.”

Short signposting sentences raise perceived structure and clarity scores.

9. Integrate evidence into sentences

Weak:

Many scholars have written about this topic. Smith (2020) said trust matters.

Strong:

Trust is not a peripheral variable but the central explanatory mechanism for hybrid team performance (Smith, 2020).

The citation supports your claim, instead of being the claim.

10. Edit in three passes

  • Pass 1 — Structure. Does each paragraph earn its place? Move, delete, rewrite topic sentences.
  • Pass 2 — Evidence. Is every claim supported? Is every citation correctly formatted?
  • Pass 3 — Sentence. Active voice, vary length, trim filler, kill repetition.

Reading the whole essay aloud catches at least one issue every editing pass will miss.

11. Reference as you go

Do not try to assemble the reference list the night before. Use Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote from the research stage. It will save you 4+ hours per essay and eliminate the classic “missing reference” bloodbath.

12. Exam essays: plan for 8 minutes

In time-limited exam essays, spend the first 5–8 minutes planning — even if you feel the clock. Students who plan always outperform students who dive in. Your plan should be:

  • One line: thesis.
  • Four lines: paragraph points in order.
  • One line: conclusion.

Then write with confidence.
